In pursuit of Hapa-ness

Writing, laughing, talking, creating, seeking, reflecting, hiding in, running to, remembering, tasting, molding, embracing the inbetween spaces.
“I came to know afterward that in many ways it was a crime to be a Filipino in California.  I came to know that the public streets were not free to my people.”

Cesar Chavez Day reminds me how
invisible Filipinos are to this day.

When it’s a controversy to teach
Filipino farmworker history…

When not everyone knows who Dolores
Huerta and Larry Itliong are…

When youth teach their elders who
started the Delano Grape Strike…

There is something fundamentally
wrong with how we study this history. Celebrate victories and honor leaders, but listen carefully to the many voices in the chorus. That’s where you can hear real change. The UFW was a movement not a man.
